Il Volo

Italian heartthrobs Il Volo — Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble — have been receiving unanimous raves for their vocal talent and showmanship. Since their May 2011 debut in the U.S., the three Teenage Tenors have appeared on “American Idol,” “The Tonight Show,” “Ellen,” “The Today Show” and “Good Morning America,” among others, and their single, “O Solo Mio,” has been viewed by more than a million fans on YouTube. Already certified platinum in their homeland, Italy, and several other countries, they have captured the hearts of Americans of all ages. Il Volo Takes Flight airs Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at 7 p.m. on Eight, Arizona PBS.

The Teenage Tenors took the audience by storm during the live concert taping, singing operatic, pop and Italian classics that showcased their vocal talent as well as their interpretive gift for music. Backed by a 49-piece orchestra and five-piece rhythm section, Il Volo’s versions of “O Sole Mio,” “Il Mondo” and “E Più Ti Penso,” a medley of Ennio Morricone songs from the soundtracks to Once Upon a Time in America and Malena, and the Charlie Chaplin song, “Smile,” brought the audience to their feet. A touching moment came when the boys serenaded their tearful mothers with the popular Italian song “Mamma.” The trio continued their magic with the well-known Neopolitan song, “Funiculì, Funiculà” with audience members clapping and singing along. A favorite contestant from “American Idol”’s Season 10, Pia Toscano, joined in to sing and dance to a brand new Diane Warren original, “La Luna Hizo Esto”; world-class guitarist Milos Karadaglic accompanied the group to introduce the song “Granada.”

Il Volo may be young, but the mission is clear: “We want to share our love for this music with people all over the world, including kids our own age.”

Il Volo Takes Flight is just the beginning of what is sure to be an exciting adventure for Gianluca (who hails from Abruzzo), Ignazio (born in Bologna) and Piero (from Agrigento, Sicily). After their debut on the Italian hit TV show, “Ti Lascio Una Canzone” (“Leaving You a Song”), Universal Music Group released Il Volo’s self-titled debut album in Italy in November 2010 and worldwide in June 2011. The album is already certified gold and on its way to platinum status in their home country.
