How Buckeye’s mayor plans to help with affordable housing

More from this show

House Bill 2371 has been dubbed the “Arizona Starter Home Act.” Its supporters say it would make housing, particularly in the metro areas, more affordable. Its opponents say it would trample local control and harm existing neighborhoods.

Last year, Arizona mayors held a press conference urging Governor Katie Hobbs to veto the starter homes bill. Opponents argued it won’t result in affordability and would limit cities’ abilities to address the crisis themselves.

As the leader of a fast-growing community, Mayor Eric Orsborn plans to provide a powerful, real-world perspective on affordable housing and starter homes, and he joined us on “Arizona Horizon” to discuss his plans.

Mayor Orsborn said it “would allow multifamily residential density on single-family lots,” and said the bill ignores other issues hampering rapid home development, such as water policy and overall infrastructure.

Mayor Orsborn testified this year that one of the country’s fastest-growing areas is already working on building single-family homes.
