Phoenix hosting National High School Mock Trial Championship

Phoenix is set to host the National High School Mock Trial Championship with high school students from all over the country participating along with some international students. This will be the third time the city has hosted the event.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Dewain Fox joined “Arizona Horizon” to discuss the event and the concepts behind it.

Judge Fox explained it’s important for members of the judicial branch to participate in programs like mock trial to promote an understanding of the judiciary’s role in our system of government. The event also helps students develop skills by participating in the program.

This year’s theme is State 48 and the Fourth Estate, which is particularly timely and relevant today.

The fictional case that the competitors are taking on is inspired by the assassination of Arizona Republic Reporter Don Bolles.

“We’re using this as a vehicle to prompt a discussion about the fourth estate and the importance of a free and fair press to a healthy and robust democracy,” Judge Fox said.

Although there are many educational takeaways from the events, Judge Fox shared an important one that participants should have.

“This really is about them having fun with this case. The feedback that we’ve heard so far is positive, so I hope they really do have a good time and take advantage of what Phoenix has to offer,” Judge Fox said.
