Journalists’ Roundtable: Kelly vs. Pentagon, Chaplik announces for CD1 and more
Dec. 19, 2025
It’s Friday, which means it is time for another edition of Journalists’ Roundtable, where we discuss Arizona politics. This week, “Arizona Horizon” host Ted Simons was joined by Ray Stern of “The Arizona Republic” and azcentral.com, Howie Fischer of Capitol Media Services, and Wayne Schutsky of KJZZ.
This week’s topics included:
- Kelly vs. Pentagon
- Chaplik announces for Congressional District 1
- Federal oversight of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office
- David Henderschott dies
- Capitol route for light rail
- No speed limits on rural highways
Chaplik announces for Congressional District 1:
Howie Fischer: “Look at how many people that are in it who have higher name ID, certainly Joseph Chaplik…a statellaw maker, been there a while, the endorsement of the freedom caucus…and then you have Gene Swoboda…also name ID, now as we always discuss when you have 12 people in a race, somebody with 15% could walk away with it, and that could be what happens.”
Wayne Schutsky: “I think a lot of this is gonna rest on who the president ultimately backs in this race, whether he really backs anyone locally…if he really comes out strong behind any one of those three, that could give them the edge they need.”
Kelly vs. Pentagon:
Ray Stern: “This is not gonna be in civil court apparently, so maybe Trump as commander-in chief has more sway over what’s gonna happen there…looking at the other lawsuits where the department of justice basically wanted to do what Trump did, that just hasn’t worked out so far.”
Howie Fischer: “Freedom of speech does not exist in the military…that’s what the trial is gonna be about, how can you be punished for pointing out what is in the uniform code of military justice…he(Trump) is so mad at Kelly…he sees him as a potential candidate…he’s gonna do anything he can to damage him.”
