Eat & Cook Healthy! With Dr. John La Puma

More from pressroom

Whether your goal is to live longer than an Okinawan or better than an Olympian (or Oprah!), too many of us suffer from the same Ground Hog Day condition: runaway eating.

You've skipped breakfast, you've fasted at lunch, and you've torn the door off the fridge around 6pm. Now what? To get and stay healthy, you'll want to watch Eat & Cook Healthy! With Dr. John La Puma , a program that serves viewers bite-sized, delicious morsels of the best science — and recipes — for what, where, when and how to eat for a better life now.

Eat & Cook Healthy! With Dr. John La Puma airs Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. on Eight, Arizona PBS.

At age thirty-five, after eating too much of the Standard American Diet (SAD, isn't it?), Dr. La Puma had become SAD-ly paunchy. So he decided to research the science of nutrition and attended culinary school. He learned the right number of walnuts (11) to keep a fatty meal from stiffening your arteries, and how to cook pasta to lower its glycemic index (al dente) so that it raises your blood sugar slowly and gently. And a lot more.

In Eat & Cook Healthy! With Dr. John La Puma , you'll learn to stock the medicine chest in your kitchen, do for yourself what your doctor can't do for you and choose dishes that help you look and feel as healthy as you want. You'll learn that some eating mistakes are simple to make — and then how to get a do-over. And you'll learn that the easiest change is the most important: finding passion in your foods, drinks, meals, menus, kitchen — and life.

Dr. La Puma offers a tasty, hands-on plan to inspire you and help you change your life. Nutritious meals don't have to be time consuming, filled with hard-to-find ingredients, or taste like they're good for you. Dr. La Puma's recipes explode with flavor, are simple to make and are low in calories, aging fats, sugars and chemicals.

Recipes include:

•  Saffron Scallop, Shrimp, and Chickpea Paella

•  Sicilian Pasta with Swiss Chard, Goat Cheese and Basil

•  Spicy and Rich Sausage and Kidney Bean Chili

Dr. La Puma is the author of The New York Times best-selling book Chef MD's Big Book of Culinary Medicine.
