A new commercial development in Tempe aims to cater to the city’s growing tech sector, and will be built across 18 acres of land near Tempe Town Lake

Plans for IDEA Tempe include five commercial buildings, retail space, classrooms and restaurants. City officials say the development’s proximity to Arizona State University will make it easier for students interested in working in tech to find employment near school.

“We have a great ability to find qualified individuals here because of the university system,” David Cano, who works within Human Resources at Becton Dickinson, says. “No doubt we are able to find candidates to work for us.”

Tempe is the Goldilocks city for technology, explains Tempe Economic Development Director Donna Kennedy. Residents can get around by light rail, take bike rides at Tempe Town Lake and meet others in their profession through ASU. Kennedy says there’s also great collaboration between tech companies in the city.
