Journalists’ Roundtable discussed Biden, abortion measures and more
July 12, 2024
On this week’s Journalists’ Roundtable, three local journalists, Jeremy Duda of Axios Phoenix, Wayne Schutsky of KJZZ Radio, and Mary Jo Pitzl of “The Arizona Republic” and azcentral.com, dove into pressing issues.
This week’s topics included:
- AG goes after voucher abuse
- Fight over abortion ballot measure wording
- Rogers smears fellow Republican
- Stanton and Grijalva want Biden out
With regard to the school vouchers, the supplemental materials for students have to be related to the curriculum in some way, however the handbook explains it differently.
“They point to a section of state law that says some of these supplemental materials have to be connected to a curriculum that has to approved by the department, and the department’s own handbook says differently. It says these certain supplemental materials specifically don’t need that sort of documentation showing they’re connected to the curriculum. The Department of Education blames it on the previous administration,” said Schutsky.
There is also a problem with the way the ballot is worded for abortion. People would like to change the wording to make it more specific and tailored to their views.
“This is not a neutral term. It’s politically charged, and the mandate for this committee is to approve impartial language even if you’re trying to be impartial to unborn human beings, fetus in this context, they do have certain connotation’s, and they are politically charged,” said Pitzl.
Wendy Rogers’ attempted to smear fellow Republican Ari Daniel Bradshaw.
“Ari Bradshaw is a Republican. He’s running for the Arizona House of Representatives in District 2 which is north Phoenix. Wendy Rogers, as you know, is a senator out in rural Arizona, a very combative type known to get in fights with fellow Republicans,” said Duda.
