The Black Theatre Troupe brings Langston Hughes’ ‘Black Nativity’ to life

More from this show

Coming soon, The Black Theatre Troupe will present Langston Hughes’ song play, “Black Nativity,” a moving, soulful retelling of the Nativity story.

David Hemphill, Executive Director of The Black Theatre Troupe, and Tony Wheaton, Director of “Black Nativity,” joined “Arizona Horizon” to discuss their show.

“Black Nativity” is a retelling of the Nativity story brought to life through vibrant gospel music, dance and spoken word.

“It’s our Christmas card to the community,” Hemphill said.

Wheaton got his start with The Black Theatre Troupe by performing on stage in “Black Nativity” as a teenager and appeared in their holiday production for over 10 years. He was first cast in the Troupe’s production of “The Wiz” in 2018 and began working behind the scenes as stage manager and production manager.

“He had drive from the beginning,” Hemphill said, “…he was young, but he had a good drive from the beginning. It’s important with children’s programs to have someone that can act as a peer and as a leader.”

Last season, Wheaton made his debut directing “Black Nativity,” for which he was nominated by Broadway World for 2024 Best Direction of a Musical.

“The first half is Langston Hughes’ words and text, the story,” Hemphill described, “…but the second half is the creation of the director that’s in charge. It’s a musical concert.”

The production will run from December 6 to December 15, 2024, at The Black Theatre Troupe, located at the Helen K. Mason Performing Arts Center, 1333 E. Washington in Phoenix.
