Orpheus Male Chorus of Phoenix prepares for holiday concerts

More from this show

The Orpheus Male Chorus of Phoenix is Arizona’s longest continuously performing choral arts organization. The chorus holds concerts around the Valley each year, and three holiday concerts are coming up in early December.

Dr. Steven Gray, an organist of Orpheus Male Chorus of Phoenix, joined “Arizona Horizon” to talk more about the Orpheus Male Chorus and their upcoming concerts.

Orpheus has three upcoming holiday concerts:
• Saturday, December 6 | 3 PM | Camelback Bible | Paradise Valley
• Sunday, December 7 | 3 PM | American Lutheran Church | Sun City
• Saturday, December 13 | 3 PM | St. Matthew United Methodist Church | Mesa

“You’ve got 80-plus voices coming together every week to put on these concerts,” Dr. Gray said, noting members range from seasoned musicians to people who, as he joked while recruiting at the Veterans Day Parade, “sing in the shower and want to try the next step.”

Each venue features its own pipe organ, something Dr. Gray is especially excited about. With a background in both piano and organ, he’ll be featured on at least one piece for organ and chorus, likely including a festive “Gloria.”

Dr. Gray described accompanying such a large ensemble as demanding but rewarding, requiring careful listening, precision and the ability to support, rather than overpower, the singers.

Beyond the concert stage, Orpheus sees itself as a community-focused organization. Members frequently perform at Veterans’ homes and other local events, using music as a way to connect and give back.

For Dr. Gray, that mission is as important as the music itself.

“It’s not just about the notes,” he said. “It’s about showing up for the community and creating something together that lifts people up, especially during the holidays.”
