Possible U.S. and Iran negotiations to end war
April 15
The latest on the war in Iran, including negotiations and the Strait of Hormuz.
Kurt Volker, the former U. S. Ambassador to NATO, joined “Arizona Horizon” to discuss the war.
“President Trump is right when he says the Iranian regime has been awful,” Volker said, “…when we launch this war, the goals have shifted over time…I think the American people…they want to see the US be successful, but they’re a little unclear where we’re going as far as blocking the Strait of Hormuz.”
According to Volker, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is easier to maintain than opening the strait, as the U.S. Navy is patrolling and questioning any vessel that may be conducting business with Iran.
“Neither side really wants to resume armed conflict,” Volker discussed. “The war is not popular here, the war’s not popular in Iran, so I think we’re going to have these talks again this week, and agree to more talks, and agree to more time.”
Volker explained that while Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed, the same regime still exists but with new faces.
“You also have Iran having the ability now to hold Gulf, arab states hostage, or shipping hostage with minimal effort,” Volker discussed. “Just one missile will be all it takes to shut things down, and that is a problem that we still have to face.”
NATO is a collective defense Alliance to make sure nobody attacks the North Atlantic area, Europe, and North America. Volker emphasized how effective NATO has been for over 75 years, since its creation.
“What President Trump was looking for is support from those same European allies for his war against Iran,” Volker said. “They had no idea this war was coming, and then President Trump is saying you weren’t there with us…so there’s a little bit of confusion on the European side.”
