In this episode of “Arizona Horizon,” we sat down with Al Gameros, Mayor of Globe, Arizona, to discuss FEMA’s denial of Arizona’s appeal for a federal disaster declaration. In September 2025, historic floodwaters in Globe and Miami killed three people and caused nearly $100 million in damage.
We also heard from Dr. Jennifer Vanos, ASU Senior Global Futures Scientist, to learn about new ASU research suggesting dry and humid heat can be equally fatal. By showing the body has a strict limit on how much it can sweat, findings reveal that once the threshold is reached, extreme dry heat poses a danger comparable to intense humid heat.
Finally, Bretta Nelson, Arizona Burn Foundation Director of Marketing, and Fire Captain Ryan Tussing, Co-founder of Rescue Retriever, explained the Arizona Burn Foundation’s new partnership with Rescue Retriever. The collaboration introduces pet smoke alarms, a paw‑shaped device that flashes a silent strobe when smoke is detected.
