Arizona Proposition 313: Debate on life sentences for sex trafficking of kids
Aug. 12, 2024
Arizona Proposition 313 proposes a significant change to the state’s approach to combating child sex trafficking. If enacted, this constitutional amendment would mandate a life sentence for individuals convicted of a Class 2 felony related to the trafficking of minors for sexual exploitation.
Under Arizona law, child sex trafficking encompasses various illegal activities, including the use, transportation, recruitment or provision of minors for prostitution or any sexually explicit performances. Proposition 313 aims to impose stringent penalties to deter such heinous crimes and protect vulnerable children.
The debate over Proposition 313 has garnered attention, featuring key voices on both sides. Kayleigh Kozak, Founder and President of Because You Still Matter, supports the measure, advocating for stricter penalties to address the growing crisis of child sex trafficking. Conversely, Jenna Panas, CEO of The Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence, presented concerns and arguments against the proposition. Both leaders appeared on “Arizona Horizon” to discuss their perspectives and the implications of this proposed amendment.
