The Donkeys of the Heart provides curative and educational opportunities

More from this show

The Donkeys of the Heart is a nonprofit organization in Cave Creek. The organization provides curative and educational opportunities to those with cognitive, mental and behavioral challenges by connecting them with donkeys. They also help with at-risk community members and military members.

The adaptive riding offers physical, psychological and educational benefits to those who participate. Riders have seen improved balance and strength, self-confidence and greater listening skills and focus.

In Equine (donkey) Assisted Learning, the donkeys are actually co-facilitators. Participants actively engage in and reflect upon hands-on activities with donkeys. The sessions provide opportunities to learn a variety of life skills and to develop self-confidence and self-esteem. Social and emotional skills are developed through participation in purposeful activities.

Founder Sophie Ranier and Katie Stearns joined us on “Arizona Horizon” to talk about the organization’s services. Also joining us in studio was miniature donkey, Guillermo.

Meet Guillermo!

Guillermo is 25 years old and was rescued in Yuma, Arizona. He is said to be an outstanding therapy donkey. His special gift is his ability to stay calm and steady in any given situation. He proved that on “Arizona Horizon,” as he remained sweet and calm during his entire interview with Ted Simons. For more interviews featuring Ted Simons with animals, watch Ted’s Tails over on our AZPBS Now YouTube Channel.

Guillermo also enjoyed treats from his big box of Cheerios! Our crew fell in love with Guillermo, and he was happy to stand still for plenty of photos, pats and hugs.

According to The Donkeys of the Heart website, “Guillermo is an old soul, and if you ask him, he will deny he is a donkey, and rather insist he should be living in the house with the humans.” His name means “determined protector.”

Get involved

There are plenty of ways to get involved with The Donkeys of the Heart. They offer low fees to allow anyone in need to have access to the programs.

You can help by donating, sponsoring a donkey or stopping by the Black Mountain Feed Store to buy some items on their wish list. The store is located at 6198 E. Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek, Arizona, 85331.

Volunteers are also needed. Volunteers can do anything from donkey care and handling to fundraising or office work.
