The Phoenix Zoo trains ambassador animals that participate in educational shows, outreach programs and media appearances to inspire conservation.
These animals, often seen at the Doornbos Discovery Amphitheater, are trained using positive reinforcement to showcase natural behaviors up close. The zoo also brings ambassador animals to schools and events through their “Outreach Live on Location” program.
Kim Richards, Phoenix Zoo Senior Zookeeper, joined “Arizona Horizon” to discuss this team of animals.
The Phoenix Zoo is home to many animals from lions to leopards, but only some animals are chosen and trained to become ambassador animals. Like Lulu, the greater sulphur-crested cockatoo, was trained to be an ambassador animal after being given to the zoo by a retired magician.
Ambassador animals go through a series of trainings to become comfortable being handled, and each training experience differs from species to species. They serve the role of interacting up-close with guests, not only to create a memorable experience, but to raise awareness about the zoo’s conservation efforts.
“My favorite part, as we see here, being able to talk to the younger generation,” Richards said. “We want to inspire everybody, but really the younger generations. We need zoo keepers after we all leave.”
While Lulu’s species is not endangered, her presence can spark conversations with curious zoo-goers about other types of bird species that may not have the same standing.
Ambassador animals’ enclosures are located in a private area of the zoo, away from viewing; however, it is still very easy to get up-close with these friendly creatures.
“The best way to see our ambassador animals is by coming in the mornings and seeing them at the front gates… they’re also a part of our shows,” Richards said.
