Discover 15+ tamale varieties at The Tamale Store in Phoenix

More from this show

In the heart of Phoenix, The Tamale Store stands as a beacon for tamale enthusiasts, drawing attention from locals and visitors alike.

Martha Castillo started selling her tamales at Farmers Markets, and they were so popular, her kids convinced her to open a restaurant. Now all of her kids work with her at the store tucked into a strip mall along Cave Creek Road in Phoenix. Her son, Eddy, charmingly likens the restaurant to the “Willy Wonka” of tamales, a fitting description considering the diverse and delightful offerings available.

The Tamale Store is unique not only for its abundance of tamale types (they have more than 15 different ones including dessert and seasonal), but the masa is vegan so everyone can eat here.

“Check, Please! Arizona” guest Janet Wilson describes the tamales as “fabulous, fluffy, and vegan.” Brent Kleinman, another guest, suggests exploring the variety the store offers, showcasing options ranging from traditional pork, beef, and chicken to innovative choices like hatch green chili and jack cheese for vegetarians.

The tamales are also a half-pound each so they are very filling. You can get plates served with rice and beans and one tamale or two. They also have a mercado where you can buy frozen tamales and other Arizona-made treats. Christmas time is very busy for them with lines wrapping out the door!

The Tamale Store is more than a restaurant; it’s a testament to the resilience and success that can come from a family’s unwavering dedication to a shared dream.
