Ruben Gallego on his first term as Senator
April 23
Senator Ruben Gallego joined “Arizona Horizon” host and managing editor Ted Simons to discuss a variety of topics as he starts his first term as Senator.
Mayhem in Washington, D.C.?
“I think there is a want for bipartisanship for certainly some of us at the Senate, Democrats and Republicans, we want to get working together in a manner that would benefit this country in a short term or long term,” Senator Gallego said.
Response to “Democrats are not fighting back hard enough against the Trump Administration”
According to Senator Gallego, the Democrats in the Senate are fighting back at the level they should be.
“They wanted us to give an opportunity to this presidency, to see if there were some compromises, places where we could work together. We did do that, and now we’ve seen, of course, that the President is outstripping the feelings, sentiments of the public, and we’re fighting him at the appropriate place and time,” Senator Gallego said.
Medicaid Access Worries in Arizona
He has visited and spoken to citizens of the rural parts of Arizona because they are in need of Medicaid the most. If the $880 billion cut were to happen, those hospitals, which mainly see Medicaid patients, would close, according to Senator Gallego.
“This is an option. The President and Republicans can extend the tax cuts further without cutting Medicaid, now you might have to give up giving the top earners tax cuts but you can still contain the middle class tax cuts as well as even hold where the corporate tax cuts are now,” Senator Gallego said.
Insider trading among elites?
“If this had been done in any other markets, if this had been done among insiders of the New York Stock Exchange, there would be an investigation, so there should be an investigation to see what happened here, if anything was involved, and then after that proceed accordingly. If there’s nothing there and there happens to be a glitch, that’s fine but there’s no way that the amount of abnormal trade that happened minutes before the announcement should not go uninvestigated,” Senator Gallego said.
U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs Problem
“I’m holding all VA political appointees hostage, essentially, until we get a real plan from this VA administrator that shows us where these cuts are, and you have to prove that these cuts are not going to affect services,” Senator Gallego said.
He used the VA when he returned from his service. He trusts the department and refers others to it as well; however, the cuts are dangerous to their services.
Democratic Party vs. American People…
“I think now we have the perfect opportunity. I think the American public gave an opportunity to this administration and they’re seeing, in a horrible manner, quite quickly that what was offered and what was promised is not actually going to occur,” Senator Gallego said.
Some events that are occurring right now, according to Senator Gallego, are high inflation, a potential recession in the future, and interest rates are not decreasing.
Promise Among Democrats or Disconnect?
“I think there is still a disconnect because we are still not prominently within the election season but showing, number one, that their fight is our fight, showing that we’re willing to throw it on the gauntlet to protect Medicaid, Social Security, Medicare, to fight for main street to make sure they are going to survive the volatility of these crazy tariff wars, to make sure people are going to have real wage growth and be able to have buying power. That’s how we win this,” Senator Gallego said.
