Heard Museum hosting special event for Indigenous People’s Day
Oct. 6
The Heard Museum will celebrate Indigenous People’s Day, with a day full of activities on October 13th. The October 13th celebration will include dancing, since every tribal culture has its own form of dancing, and during the event, the museum will mix some traditional dancing with rock, pop, and country tunes. Guests can celebrate Indigenous resiliency, explore our lineup of world-class exhibitions, enjoy a bite from our award-winning Courtyard Café, and pick up a book on Indigenous art in the bookstore.
Patty Talahongva, Heard Museum Chief Programming & Engagement Officer and Marcus Monenerkit, Heard Museum Director of Community Engagement joined “Arizona Horizon” to talk more on the festivities, Indigenous People’s Day, and what the museum has to offer year-round.
“It’s a day to celebrate the fact that we’re still here. We’re still around, and we want to invite people to the Heard Museum for a day of events that will celebrate being Native,” Talahongva said.
The theme is “Everybody Dance” to represent the differences in dances among the various Native cultures. According to Monenerkit, through the event they are hoping to inform people about, and highlight aspects of Native culture, that people may not know about.
“We are invisible. We’re invisible in our own lands,” Talahongva said. “To be able to be a part of Indigenous People’s Day, and come to the Heard Museum, not only will you be able to partake in these specific activities, but you can see all of our wonderful exhibits.”
